а выше никто не хаживал;
                             никому не хочется лезть;

9.

	Несчастен,
кто беседует с гостем и думает о завтрашнем деле;
	несчастен,

1986
If you could dull its perspicuity,
free it from chaos,
limit its gleam,
liken it to a grain of dust,
then it
would seem to exist clearly.
	Lao-Tse

1.

These things amazed me:
	the still waters,
	the familiar sky,
the junk floating slowly within stone banks.

Homeland! my heart shouted at the sight of willow:
there are willows in China
that erase their ovals with great eagerness,
since only our generosity
will meet us in the next world.

2.

The pond says:
had I hands and a voice
I would love and cherish you.
People, you see, are greedy and frequently sick
and they tear other's clothes
to make bandages.
While I need nothing:
after all, tenderness is healing.
I'd place my hands on your knees
as if I were a toy dog,
and through my voice I'd descend
from above like the heavens.

3.

In falling, they fall not
the long sleeves of trees
dip into the water but don't get wet.
My ancient trees -
pagodas, roads.
How many times have we seen each other,
yet each time's like the first,
as I gasp, my heart heaving hard
with a completely empty pack,
along the trunk, over the hills and valleys of branches,
into the long wide eyes of temples
toward the mirror on the altar,
over the green floor.
Haven't we wandered enough
to set off together at last
along the only pleasant
                        invisible
                               path
                                         that bothers no one?

Cap conferring invisibility,
godly garment, garment of eyes,
in falling it falls not, dips into the water but isn't wet.
Trees, for you only "I love you" will do.

4.

There - on a mountain
at whose knees is a last hut,
and no one's gone higher;
whose brow can't be seen behind the storm clouds
so you can't say whether it's frowning or smiling -
someone comes and doesn't,
                             is and isn't.
He's the size of a swallow's eye,
of a crumb of dry bread,
of a ladder on a butterfly's wings,
a ladder thrown down from heaven,
of a ladder that
                             no one wants to climb;
smaller than what wasps see,
                             smaller than the word is.

5.

Do you know
the dwarf pines, the weeping willows?
An untied boat
doesn't hug the bank for long -
and there's no joy
in what's past
nor sorrow:
we're all here today, but who can speak for tomorrow?
and no reason:
only the blameless spirits are
modest, fearless, and charitable -
simple rapture
                          can't be stopped,
simple rapture
                          setting like the sun.
An untied boat
floats without a thought,
a broken bough
takes root, but not in this world.

6.

Just as soon as I'd see
a traveler brightly clad, in white -
what can we do, how can we escape?

Just as soon as I'd see
white clothing, old shoulders -
better that my eyes were made of stone
                          my heart of water.

Just as soon as I'd see
what happens to a man -
I'd follow him, weeping:
wherever he'd go, I'd go, walking
with the same measured walk.

7.

A boat's floating across the wet flattened azure.
The sky darkens quickly and glances out
with the alien eyes of that other sapphire .
Do you know what? no one ever believed me
(like a child tells another,
dying from his own audacity:
yea, and then they buried him
by the third pine). I'll tell you the same way:
no one ever believed me,
and neither will you,
just don't tell anybody
that while the boat floats, and the sun gleams
heavenly joy
is playing
in the sapphire.

8.

Roofs raised at the edges
like amazed eyebrows:
Really? you don't say? I'm so glad.
Terraces, from which you can always see
everything a person loves to see:
dry banks, silvery-yellow rivers,
a broken line of bushes - like a love letter.
Two passersby bow low
to one another on a pontoon bridge
and a swallow brings you
a teaspoon of height:
heart medicine, a healing potion.
By the way, in China no one gets sick:
the heavens know how
to strike at the right time
with a long needle.

9.

	Unhappy
is he who speaks with a guest and thinks about tomorrow's task;
	unhappy
is he who does a task and thinks about completing it;
that it's not the air and the rays that control him,
like a brush, a butterfly, or bee;
he who strikes a chord and thinks
what the next one will be
is unhappy, afraid, and miserly.

Even more unhappy
is he who does not forgive;
he's insane and does not know
how tame storks come out of the bushes,
or how the golden sphere
flies up all alone
into the precious sky above the precious earth.

10.

Great is the artist who knows no task
but the task of the playing brush:
his brush penetrates the heart of mountains,
	penetrates the happiness of leaves,
with a single strike, merely through humility,
	elation, merely through embarrassment
he penetrates immortality itself
	and immortality plays with him.

But he whom the spirit leaves, from whom
	rays are deflected,
who searches a silty spot the tenth time
	for a pure spring,
who fell from the hands of miracles, but who'd never say:
	miracles are silly -
Before him with esteem
	the heavens bow.

11.

With tenderness and depth -
since only tenderness is deep,
and only depth possesses tenderness -
out of a thousand faces I'd know;
whoever has seen it, on whomever it has glanced
from stone things as if from glass,
tender depth and deep tenderness.

So light up,
warm lantern of a west,
lamp, moth trap.
Speak once more
with our everyday light
sun of tenderness and of depth,
sun which is quitting the earth,
first and final sun.

12.

Maybe you're the soul's ring,
the blue water's stone,
a muffled voice murmuring
about a terraced garden, -
But why has the winged chariot raced with a moan,
wind, shore, a sand dune,
empty sea -
you can't say adieu
there's nowhere to part from you.
A simple man -
like salt in sea sprays,
without word, or face, or phrase,
with only the tide, salt and iodine -
having no one in whom to confide
incant internally:
Perhaps you're the soul's ring,
the blue water's stone,
a muffled voice murmuring
about an unimaginable garden.

13.

Must we, too,
	like all others,
really part?

Knowing something
about passion that's quicker than finality,
knowing something
about the world that's smaller than a penny -
		let whoever needs take -
knowing that this shell has no pearl,
that there's no match, candle, or lantern
other than the flash of rapture,
knowing whence come
sound and light -
must we, too, part, like simple fools?

Loving to be together
no less than willows love to grow by the water,
or than waters to follow a star's magnet,
or than the drunken Li Bo to stare
at the yellow, moonlike, wine,
or than a stone to sink to the bottom -

must we, too, part, like simple misers
		and boors?

14.

Flute responds to flute -
not ivory or wooden,
but the one that the mountains hold
in their caves and crevasses.
Strings respond to strings,
and words respond to words.

And the supplication of my heart
responds to the quickly rising evening star:

you breed thousands of stars,
evening star,
and thousands of supplications
burn my heart,
myriad supplications about one and the same thing:
wake up,
glance at me, my inspired friend,
see how the night sparkles...

15.

By the white way, by the cold and starry cloud they strode,
it is said, and we, too, will go:
fording the water from boulder to boulder,
fording separation from planet to planet,
like a singing voice going from note to note.
It is said that we'll all meet there, bleached
		by the milky road.
How often - I'll admit - has my heart, beating heavily,
approached the forbidden threshold
promising I don't know whom:
no one is searching for me, no one will mourn
no one will beg: remain with me!..
It's not earthly grief that makes miraculous what waits
		behind the earth's door,
it's because we don't want, don't want our trespassing,
because the time has arrived
to ask forgiveness for all, since
none can survive
without this bread of radiance.
It's time to go where
everything is compassion.

16.

You know, I love you so much
that should there come a day
when I am taken from you,
it will not take me away -
as if anyone could forget fire?
	as if anyone could forget
that happiness wants to be
and unhappiness wants not to be?
You know, I love you so much
that I can't separate it from
the wind's whistle, a branch's rustle, the rain's life,
or a path that looks candle-like,
the alien dark that mumbles,
my mind that has flashed like a match,
or even the sad dry sound of a butterfly's
	knock against glass.

17.

Whenever we decide to drift,
	not knowing what awaits us,
on inspiration's empty ship,
	on the poorly-moored raft,
on the scaly wing, or on a boat without oarsmen,
imagining the best
	and the worst of ends,
and searching for nothing inside:
that's when, in exchange for everything
the divining dice are thrown for the I Ching.
Who invented the emptiness of water? who discovered
that up above there is war?
who decreed
that gardens grow from fiery seed?
that a nightingale would rather die
than not sing what he sings,
than not write out on the silk of time
	that which the people can't.
Each time you blow into your whistle,
	inspiration, each time
between earth and our soul your springs
	climb -
if only you knew, whirlwind of death
	and you empty surface,
how I want to kiss your feet and beg forgiveness.

18.

Let us praise our earthly sphere,
	     the moon on the water,
and that which is with none and all
	     here and not here -
the size of a swallow's eye
of a crumb of dry bread
of a ladder on a butterfly's wings,
of a ladder thrown down from heaven.
My heart is bridled
not just by woe and by pity
but also by the smile
	     of miraculous water.
Let us praise the swimming of dark
	     precious branches in living glass,
and, above each grain in the earth,
the sleepless souls of all who have passed,
and the fact there are rewards,
that we can ward off evil
that there is praise in the world,
like a gardener in a garden.
